Soul Curly Kit Aids in Sister Social Scholarship
Thank You for Making Our Sponsorship Possible
As one of the official sponsors of Sister Social 2021, we send a special thank you to our VIP Curlfriends for contributing to our aid in the continuous education of two young women. The award recipients, Kylah Rhodes and Katherine Childs, were both awarded $500 scholarships to aid in their educational pursuits.

Meet Kylah Rhodes
Kylah is a graduating senior at Pike High School in Indianapolis, IN with a GPA of 3.815. She will be attending Indiana University-Bloomington. Kylah sates, "The Sister Social Scholarship will help me secure my education in my desired field of study, which was inspired by my birth story. I was born at 26 weeks gestation and weighed just over 2 pounds.
My first diaper was the size of a post-it note and my great-grandmother would carry one around in her purse to show people her “miracle” baby. In addition to being tiny, I was born with an underdeveloped respiratory system. I remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for 3 months before I was healthy enough to leave the hospital. During that extended stay, there was a nurse who took special care of me to make sure that my needs were met. Her number one goal was to make sure that I would grow into a healthy infant, child, teenager, and eventually an adult.
My birth story heavily inspired me to pursue a career in neonatology. I plan to major in biology at Indiana University. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan on attending medical school. My goal is to help as many newborn and premature infants and their families have and raise healthy babies. Additionally, I plan to focus my medical practice on narrowing the disparities between minority babies and their white counterparts so that more families will have an outcome like mine."

Meet Katherine Childs
Katherine is a Junior at North Central High School in Indianapolis, IN. Katherine stated, “This scholarship is giving me the opportunity to start senior year off strong and encouraging me to stay motivated. Not only is this important to me, but also to my family. They are all cheering me on and wishing the best for me.
For the past seventeen years, I’ve been reserved and it’s always kept me from wonderful opportunities. I always held my tongue and allowed myself to struggle because I couldn’t break the barrier I trapped myself in. It was only recently that I learned that I need to do more in order to achieve more. I’ve blocked so many blessings because I was afraid, but this is one blessing I couldn’t let slip through my fingers. This is a start of something new and I know with the right steps and actions I can follow through and accomplish future goals. Senior year will be better than last year just because I took this chance and had enough courage to apply for this scholarship.
I plan to have a positive school year and to grow even more as a person. I know I will be a step closer to achieving my main goal and not losing sight of it. I look forward to this opportunity and give thanks to those who believe in me.” Katherine was not able to attend the event as she was participating in a college visit. Her cousin Ashley Williams accepted the Sister Social scholarship on her behalf.
